American Sign Language Interpreter Job Description
A sign language interpreter is a specialist who helps to facilitate communication between Deaf or hard-of-hearing students, customers, employees, clients, etc., and other people either in 1:1 settings or group situations, including staff and students in classrooms, meetings, and activities. Assignments may be one-time or ongoing appointments. The person in this position should have knowledge of the special education system and terms related to blindness and visual impairments.
American Sign Language Interpreter Roles and Responsibilities:Standard Interpreting- Accurately provides remote or in-person interpreting services.
- Provide voice interpreting as needed.
- Accurately provides remote or in-person interpreting services for assignments requested by clients, such as teacher/parent meetings or trainings.
- Accurately provides interpreting services for SBES internal meetings and trainings.
- Establishes and maintains a good working relationship with students, staff, and/or off-site agencies as may be required by the assignment.
- Assesses student needs and the interpreting situation before and during assignments and makes adjustments as needed, such as lighting and visual contrast.
- Maintain knowledge and implementation of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and Code of Professional Conduct.
- Apply all standard interpreting roles and responsibilities.
- Accurately provide remote or in-person interpreting services for deaf/hard of hearing and deafblind students during Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) lessons.
- Allow for more time between communication of parties for the Intervener to check with the Deaf-Blind individual for comprehension.
- Provide voicing of students' responses to hearing individuals.
- Apply all standard interpreting roles and responsibilities.
- Facilitate additional communication between parties when information may not be clear without adding additional information or changing current information.
- When information is misunderstood or requires additional information, the role of the Interpreter is to promote questions between the parties involved.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $40.00 - $58.30 per hour
